Best Time to Visit Maasai Mara

The best time to visit Maasai Mara is during the Great Migration season, from July to October. Witnessing the vast herds of wildebeests and zebras crossing the Mara River is a sight you’ll cherish forever.

We find the following graphical representation to be highly instructive and highly accurate. Even during the early planning stages of our trip, we referred to this.

Getting There

For travelers flying in, the nearest airport to Maasai Mara is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. From there, you can take a connecting flight to Mara Serena Airport (MRE) or Musiara Airstrip (MDR). If traveling by train, the nearest railway station is in Nairobi, with buses also departing from Nairobi to Narok, the nearest town to Maasai Mara. From Narok, you can hire a taxi or join a safari tour to reach the national park.

Entry Fees and Permits

Entry fees for Maasai Mara National Reserve vary depending on the season and nationality. For international visitors, the approximate fee is $80 per adult per day. Additionally, a Maasai Mara Conservancy fee of $70 per person may apply. Permits for safari vehicles range from $20 to $50 per vehicle per day.

Exploring Maasai Mara

In Maasai Mara, safari experiences are referred to as “game drives.” This term originated from the early days of colonial exploration when hunting for game animals was a popular activity. Today, game drives focus on observing wildlife in their natural habitat without any hunting involved. The term “game” is used to describe wild animals, hence the term “game drive.”
