Our 6 Days Kashmir Itinerary
Introduction
Celebrating our first wedding anniversary in February 2023, we decided to visit the enchanting region of Kashmir. Known as “Paradise on Earth,” Kashmir’s stunning landscapes, serene lakes, and majestic mountains seemed like the perfect backdrop for our special celebration. Here’s a detailed account of our unforgettable 6-day journey through this mesmerizing land, filled with personal experiences and cherished memories. We call it Millennial Duo’s Perfect Kashmir Itinerary.
Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar
Arrival at Srinagar Airport
Our adventure began as soon as we landed at Srinagar Airport. The crisp, cool air and the breathtaking view of the snow-capped mountains welcomed us warmly.
Check-in at Hotel Shefaf
Instead of a houseboat, we checked into Hotel Shefaf in Srinagar. The hotel was comfortable and offered a perfect blend of traditional Kashmiri décor and modern amenities.
Evening Leisure
We spent the evening relaxing at the hotel, enjoying the serene environment and each other’s company. The anticipation of the coming adventures kept us excited and engaged.
Day 2: Day Trip to Sonamarg
Journey to Sonamarg
Early in the morning, we set off for a day trip to Sonamarg, meaning ‘Meadow of Gold’. The drive to Sonamarg was nothing short of spectacular, with the Sindh River meandering through the valley and snow-capped peaks in the backdrop.
Snow Activities at Thajiwas Glacier
Once in Sonamarg, we took a pony ride to the Thajiwas Glacier. The glacier, with its pristine ice and snow, was a sight to behold. We indulged in snow activities like sledding and snowball fights, making for a fun-filled day.
Return to Srinagar
In the late afternoon, we returned to Srinagar and our comfortable room at Hotel Shefaf. We enjoyed a quiet evening at the hotel, reminiscing about the day’s adventures.
Day 3 of our Kashmir Itinerary: Srinagar to Gulmarg
Drive to Gulmarg
After breakfast, we set off for Gulmarg. The drive was a visual treat, with lush green meadows and snow-capped peaks lining the way.
Gondola Ride and Snow Activities
Upon arrival, we immediately headed for the famous Gondola ride, one of the highest cable cars in the world. It is highly recommended to book the tickets in advance to avoid the rush. You can book the tickets at https://eticket.webfront.in/jkcc/.
Both Phase 1 and Phase 2 tickets are available online. We could only visit Phase 1 due to severe weather conditions and snow storms, but the experience was still breathtaking. As we ascended, the views became more and more spectacular. At the top, we enjoyed the snow-covered landscape and even tried our hand at skiing.
Overnight Stay at Hotel Affarwat
We spent the night in Gulmarg at Hotel Affarwat, staying at a cozy hotel with stunning views of the snow-blanketed surroundings. The evening was spent by the fireplace, enjoying a warm meal and reflecting on the day’s adventures.
Day 4: Gulmarg to Pahalgam
Travel to Pahalgam
In the morning, we traveled to Pahalgam, known as the ‘Valley of Shepherds’. The drive was picturesque, with the Lidder River accompanying us for most of the journey.
Betaab Valley
Our first stop in Pahalgam was Betaab Valley, named after the Bollywood movie ‘Betaab’ that was shot here. The lush green meadows, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, made it a perfect spot for a picnic. We spent a lovely afternoon there, taking in the stunning views.
Overnight Stay at Hotel Srichan Resort
We stayed overnight in Pahalgam at Hotel Srichan Resort, enjoying the peaceful ambiance of this beautiful valley. Our hotel provided a cozy retreat after a day of exploration.
Day 5: Pahalgam to Srinagar
Visit to Martand Sun Temple
On our way back to Srinagar, we made a stop at the Martand Sun Temple. This ancient temple, with its grand architecture and historical significance, was a fascinating detour.
Return to Srinagar
After visiting the temple, we returned to Srinagar. The drive back was as picturesque as ever, with the scenic beauty of Kashmir all around us.
Srinagar City Tour
Back in Srinagar, we embarked on a city tour. We visited the famous Mughal Gardens – Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, and Chashme Shahi. The meticulously manicured lawns, vibrant flowers, and cascading fountains were a feast for the eyes.
Shikara Ride on Dal Lake
In the evening, we embarked on a serene Shikara ride on Dal Lake. As we glided over the calm waters, the reflection of the surrounding mountains and the floating gardens created a magical atmosphere.
Overnight Stay at Deluxe Houseboats
We spent our final night in Kashmir on a houseboat, soaking in the serene environment and the beauty of Dal Lake.
Day 6 of our Kashmir Itinerary: Departure
Last-minute Shopping
Before we left, we made time for some last-minute shopping. We picked up souvenirs and gifts from the local markets to remember our trip by.
Departure from Srinagar Airport
Finally, it was time to bid farewell to Kashmir. We headed to Srinagar Airport for our departure, carrying with us unforgettable memories of a week spent in paradise.
Cautions and Tips
One important lesson we learned during our trip was the need to negotiate prices for almost everything. Whether it was for snow activities, pony rides, or souvenirs, the initial prices quoted were often exorbitant. We got scammed a few times, which, in hindsight, was a funny yet costly experience. So, make sure to negotiate well to avoid emptying your pockets.
Additionally, it is crucial to carry adequate warm clothing. Bring thermal wear, sweaters, and other wearables to keep you warm. We recommend packing at least two pairs of each item. While you can rent snow jackets and snow boots for snow activities, other warm clothing might not be available for rent. We saw many travelers who assumed they could rent warm clothing in Kashmir, only to find themselves unprepared for the cold.
Conclusion on Kashmir Itinerary
Our 6-day journey through Kashmir was nothing short of magical. From the tranquil waters of Dal Lake to the snowy peaks of Gulmarg, and from the lush valleys of Pahalgam to the golden meadows of Sonamarg, every moment was filled with beauty and adventure. Celebrating our first wedding anniversary in this paradise was a dream come true, and we left with our hearts full and our minds refreshed. Kashmir truly offers a slice of heaven on earth, and this trip ensured we experienced its magic to the fullest.
