Day 1: Arrival in Gangtok

Your adventure begins in Gangtok, the bustling capital of Sikkim.

Reaching Gangtok

The nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), and from there, it’s a scenic four-hour drive to Gangtok. Alternatively, you can take a train to New Jalpaiguri and then a taxi or shared jeep to Gangtok. We found the drive quite refreshing, with the Teesta River accompanying us along the way.

Settling into Your Accommodation

Choose from a range of accommodations, from luxurious hotels to cozy homestays. After checking in, take some time to relax and soak in the fresh mountain air. We stayed at a charming boutique hotel called HOTEL CARDAMOM which offered stunning views of the Himalayas.

Exploring MG Marg

In the evening, make your way to MG Marg, the heart of Gangtok. This lively pedestrian street is perfect for a leisurely stroll, shopping for souvenirs, and sampling local cuisine. Additionally, we enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere and tried some delicious momos from a street vendor. Moreover, the bustling energy of the street added to our excitement, creating an unforgettable experience. Overall, MG Marg offers a delightful blend of culture, cuisine, and camaraderie, making it a must-visit destination in Gangtok.

Visiting the Enchey Monastery

Before calling it a day, visit the Enchey Monastery. This 200-year-old monastery offers a tranquil environment and a panoramic view of Gangtok. The peace we felt here was the perfect start to our Sikkim adventure.

Day 2: Exploring Gangtok

Tsomgo Lake

Start your day with a visit to Tsomgo Lake, located at an altitude of 12,400 feet. This glacial lake, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, is a sight to behold. During winter, the lake remains frozen, adding to its mystical charm. We were mesmerized by the reflection of the mountains in the clear blue water.

Baba Mandir

A short drive from Tsomgo Lake takes you to Baba Mandir, a shrine dedicated to Baba Harbhajan Singh, a soldier of the Indian Army who is revered as a saint. Legend has it that Baba Harbhajan Singh, affectionately known as “Baba” by soldiers, continues to watch over the border area even after his demise.

One popular story recounts how Baba Harbhajan Singh, while on patrol duty, went missing in the harsh Himalayan terrain. His fellow soldiers believed him to be dead, but Baba appeared in the dreams of one of his colleagues, informing him of his location and asking for a shrine to be built in his honor. Miraculously, his body was found exactly where he had appeared in the dream.

Since then, Baba Mandir has been visited by thousands of pilgrims who come to pay their respects and seek blessings. The atmosphere at the shrine is serene, with devotees offering prayers and lighting incense sticks. Many believe that Baba Harbhajan Singh’s spirit continues to protect and guide the soldiers patrolling the border.

Nathula Pass (if permitted)

If you have obtained the required permit, you can proceed to Nathula Pass, a strategic border post between India and China. Not only does the pass offer a unique glimpse into the geopolitical significance of the region, but it also provides stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Unfortunately, during our visit, the pass was closed due to heavy snowfall. However, it’s definitely worth visiting if conditions allow.

Day 3: Gangtok to Lachen

Journey to Lachen

Today, you embark on a journey to Lachen, a picturesque village in North Sikkim. The drive is approximately six hours, with plenty of scenic spots along the way. We were captivated by the changing landscapes as we ascended into the mountains.

Singhik View Point

Stop at Singhik View Point for a mesmerizing view of Mount Kanchenjunga and the Teesta River. It’s a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts, and we spent some time here soaking in the beauty and taking pictures.

Seven Sisters Waterfall

Another must-see on the way is the Seven Sisters Waterfall. This multi-tiered waterfall cascading down a rugged cliff is a spectacular sight, especially after the monsoon season. The roar of the water and the lush greenery around made it a memorable stop.

Day 4: Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake and Lachung

Early Start to Gurudongmar Lake

Rise early and head to Gurudongmar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world at an altitude of 17,800 feet. The pristine blue waters of the lake surrounded by snow-covered peaks are simply breathtaking. The high altitude made breathing a bit challenging, but the surreal beauty of the place made it worth the effort.

Visit to Thangu Valley

On your way back from Gurudongmar Lake, stop by Thangu Valley. This high-altitude valley is dotted with traditional wooden houses and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. We enjoyed a cup of hot tea here, which was much needed in the cold weather.

Journey to Lachung

Continue your journey to Lachung, another beautiful village in North Sikkim. The drive takes around three hours from Lachen. We were amazed by the scenic beauty along the way and the warm hospitality of the locals. This completes 4 days of our Sikkim travel itinerary, 4 more days to go!

Day 5 (of your Sikkim Travel Itinerary): Lachung to Yumthang Valley and Zero Point

Early Start to Yumthang Valley

Rise early and head to Yumthang Valley, also known as the Valley of Flowers. Located at an elevation of 11,800 feet, the valley is famous for its meadows of rhododendrons and other alpine flowers. The beauty of the valley left us spellbound.

Exploring the Valley of Flowers

Spend the morning exploring the valley. The vibrant colors and the serene environment make it a perfect place for nature walks and photography. We took a leisurely walk, breathing in the fresh mountain air and capturing the stunning landscapes.

Visit to Zero Point

From Yumthang Valley, you can venture even further to Zero Point, situated at an altitude of 15,300 feet. Despite its challenging drive, the journey is immensely rewarding, providing mesmerizing vistas of snow-covered landscapes and the convergence of three rivers. The icy cold winds, coupled with the breathtaking scenery, transformed this excursion into one of the standout moments of our trip.

Return to Lachung

Return to Lachung in the evening, where you can enjoy a warm meal and rest. We were exhausted but incredibly happy with the day’s experiences.

Day 6: Lachung to Gangtok

Return Journey

After breakfast, start your journey back to Gangtok. The return trip offers another chance to take in the stunning landscapes. We made a few stops along the way to capture some more beautiful moments.

Visit Phodong Monastery

En route, visit the Phodong Monastery. This monastery, one of the six major monasteries in Sikkim, is known for its beautiful murals and peaceful ambiance. The serene environment and the spiritual vibes made our visit memorable.

Relaxation in Gangtok

Once back in Gangtok, take the evening to relax. You might want to visit a local café or simply enjoy the view from your hotel. We enjoyed a quiet evening, reflecting on our journey so far.

Day 7: Gangtok to Pelling via Buddha Park of Ravangla

Scenic Drive to Pelling via Buddha Park

Leave Gangtok behind and embark on a scenic drive to Pelling. Along the way, make a stop at the Buddha Park of Ravangla, a serene garden adorned with Buddhist statues and offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Spend some time exploring the park and soaking in the tranquil ambiance before continuing your journey to Pelling.

Kanchenjunga Falls

Upon reaching Pelling, first visit the Kanchenjunga Falls. Not only is this perennial waterfall a major attraction, but it is also a great spot for some adventurous activities like zip-lining. Moreover, the cascading water and the lush surroundings were a treat to the eyes. Overall, this experience adds excitement and natural beauty to your trip.

Pemayangtse Monastery

In the afternoon, visit the Pemayangtse Monastery, one of the oldest and most important monasteries in Sikkim. The monastery offers a deep insight into Tibetan Buddhism and stunning views of the Himalayas. We spent some peaceful moments here, absorbing the spiritual ambiance.

Day 8: Exploring Pelling and Departure

Rabdentse Ruins

Begin your last day with a visit to the Rabdentse Ruins. These ruins are remnants of the former capital of the Kingdom of Sikkim and offer a peek into the region’s history. Walking through the ruins, we felt a deep connection to Sikkim’s rich past.

Sky Walk and Chenrezig Statue

Next, head to the Pelling Sky Walk, India’s first glass skywalk, which leads to the massive Chenrezig Statue. Not only are the views from here breathtaking, but they also provide a perfect end to your Sikkim adventure. Furthermore, standing on the glass skywalk and looking down was a thrilling experience. Overall, this destination combines natural beauty with an adrenaline rush, making it a must-visit spot.

Departure

After exploring Pelling, it’s time to head back. Depending on your travel plans, you can either return to Gangtok or go straight to Bagdogra Airport. We chose to go to Bagdogra Airport for our flight back to Bengaluru, remembering the great memories we made during our trip. This also marked an end to our perfectly planned Sikkim travel itinerary.
