Hong Kong Visa Application Tip: Double-Check These Fields Before Submission

When people search for reasons behind a Hong Kong visa rejection, they usually focus on bank statements, employment proof, travel history, hotel bookings, or supporting documents.

However, during our own Hong Kong visa application process before visiting Hong Kong in April 2025, we noticed a small detail that could easily be overlooked.

This is not an official rejection reason published by the Hong Kong Immigration Department. It is simply an observation from our application experience that may help other travellers avoid unnecessary mistakes.

Why We Wanted to Write This?

Recently, we have seen many Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts where travellers claim they were stopped at the airport while boarding a flight to Hong Kong.

Some of these videos show people crying at the airport and blaming Hong Kong immigration, the airline, or airport staff.

Naturally, such videos go viral very quickly.

The problem is that most viewers do not know the full context. Still, comment sections often get filled with strong opinions, blame, and advice from people who may not have gone through the actual process themselves.

We are not saying every case is the same.

But from our own Hong Kong visa application experience before travelling in April 2025, we strongly feel that small application mistakes can create unnecessary problems later.

That is why we wanted to share this simple but important detail.

Our Hong Kong Visa Application Experience

During our April 2025 Hong Kong trip, we completed the online Pre-Arrival Registration application from their official website ourselves and noticed something that could confuse first-time applicants.

While filling out the Hong Kong visa application, two fields required extra attention:

  • Place of Birth
  • Place of Issue of Passport

At first glance, both seem straightforward.

However, both fields can have similar-looking place names, older city names, and multiple variants of the same city.

The Dropdown Issue We Noticed

In the Hong Kong PAR application, the Place of Birth field allows applicants to select Others and manually enter the place name.

This is useful when the exact spelling shown on your passport is not available in the dropdown.

For example, if your passport says Bengaluru, India, but the dropdown does not show the exact same spelling, selecting Others and manually typing BENGALURU, INDIA may be the safer option.

Place of Issue of Passport: Choose Carefully

The Place of Issue of Passport field also requires careful attention.

From what we checked on the PAR website, this field can show multiple variants of the same city.

For example, the dropdown may show options such as:

  • Bangalore
  • Bangalore, Karnataka
  • Bengaluru
  • Bengaluru, Karnataka

This can confuse applicants because all these options may look similar.

However, your selection should match the place of issue shown on your passport as closely as possible.

Unlike the Place of Birth field, the Place of Issue of Passport field may not provide an “Others” option. So applicants need to carefully choose the correct option from the available dropdown list.

Screenshot from the Hong Kong PAR application showing multiple variants such as Bangalore, Bangalore Karnataka, Bengaluru, and Bengaluru Karnataka. Choose the option that matches your passport as closely as possible.

Example: Bengaluru vs Bangalore

Suppose your passport says:

Place of Birth: Bengaluru, India

But the Place of Birth dropdown does not show the same spelling.

In that case, instead of selecting an older or different spelling, you can choose:

Others

and manually enter the place exactly as shown on your passport.

Now suppose your passport says:

Place of Issue of Passport: Bengaluru

or

Place of Issue of Passport: Bengaluru, Karnataka

If the passport issue dropdown shows both Bangalore and Bengaluru, do not select randomly. Choose the option that matches your passport wording as closely as possible.

What We Did Instead

Our approach was simple.

For the Place of Birth field, if the exact spelling from the passport was available, we selected it.

If the exact spelling was not available, we selected:

Others

and manually entered the location exactly as it appeared on the passport.

For the Place of Issue of Passport field, we carefully checked the available dropdown options and selected the option that matched the passport as closely as possible.

Why This Matters

Immigration applications are built around document consistency.

Names, dates, passport numbers, places of birth, and passport issue locations should be reviewed carefully.

Even if Bengaluru and Bangalore refer to the same city, matching the passport wording wherever the system allows it removes unnecessary confusion.

Before submitting your Hong Kong visa application, double-check every field against your passport.

Our Recommendation for Hong Kong Visa Applicants

Before submitting your application:

Check Your Place of Birth

Ensure the spelling matches your passport exactly wherever possible.

Use “Others” for Place of Birth When Needed

If the exact Place of Birth wording is unavailable, select Others and manually enter the location as shown in your passport.

Check Your Place of Issue of Passport

This field can show multiple variants of the same city.

Select the option that matches your passport as closely as possible.

Do Not Rush Through Dropdown Fields

Dropdown fields may look simple, but they can contain similar-looking options.

Take a few extra seconds to compare each option with your passport.

Review Everything Before Submission

Compare your application against your passport page by page before final submission.

Hong Kong Visa Application Checklist

  • Match your name exactly as per your passport.
  • Match your date of birth correctly.
  • Match your passport number carefully.
  • Match your Place of Birth exactly wherever the system allows it.
  • Use “Others” for Place of Birth if the exact place name is not available.
  • Check the Place of Issue of Passport dropdown carefully.
  • Select the passport issue place that matches your passport as closely as possible.
  • Do not rush through dropdown fields.
  • Review all details once again before final submission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does selecting Bangalore instead of Bengaluru automatically cause a Hong Kong visa rejection?

We cannot confirm that. Hong Kong immigration authorities consider multiple factors while reviewing an application. However, we believe it is always safer to ensure that information entered in the application matches the passport as closely as the system allows.

Does the Hong Kong PAR Application’s Place of Birth field have an “Others ” option?

Yes, based on what we checked on the Hong Kong PAR website, the Place of Birth field allows applicants to select Others and manually enter the place name.

Does the Hong Kong PAR Application’s Place of Issue of Passport field have an “Others” option?

Based on what we checked, the Place of Issue of Passport field does not appear to have an Others option when the passport is issued in India. Applicants should carefully choose the available dropdown option that matches their passport as closely as possible.

Why are there multiple variants of the same city in the Hong Kong Visa Application?

We do not know how the dropdown values are maintained. Based on our observation, some entries appear to contain older spellings, current spellings, city-only options, and city-with-state options.

What should I do if my Place of Birth is not listed in the Hong Kong Visa Application?

Select “Others” and manually enter the location exactly as printed on your passport.

Should I blame the airline if I am not allowed to board due to a visa issue?

Not always. Airlines are usually required to check whether passengers have the right documents before boarding.
If there is a mismatch, missing approval, unclear document, or issue with the travel authorization, the airline may not allow boarding. That does not always mean the airline is at fault.

Final Thoughts

Many travellers spend hours worrying about bank balances, flight tickets, hotel bookings, and supporting documents. Yet sometimes the most important checks are the simplest ones.

Based on our Hong Kong visa application experience before travelling to Hong Kong in April 2025, we recommend paying close attention to the Place of Birth and Place of Issue of Passport fields.

For Place of Birth, if the exact spelling from your passport is not available, choosing Others and entering the information manually may be the safer approach.

For Place of Issue of Passport, check the available dropdown options carefully because the system may show multiple variants of the same city.

Before blaming immigration, airlines, or airport staff, it is also worth checking whether every detail in the application matches the passport as closely as the system allows.
